New Sharps Directive In Force 27 April 2010 A new European directive has come into force, which implements in law a framework agreement on the prevention of sharps injuries affecting workers in the healthcare sector. Up to 100,000 workers in the UK are injured due to needlestick and sharps injuries. The directive set guidelines on replacement of traditional needles with safer alternatives, improved risk assessments, guidance and traiing. Employers will also have to establish follow up policies and response where injuries occur.
