Deaf Awareness Week
28 June 2010

Today sees the start of Deaf Awareness Week. Organised by the Deaf Council, the week aims to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by deaf people in society and the most common causes of deafness.

Over 9 million people in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing. A significant proportion of these cases are due to noise-induced hearing loss.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set out guidelines, limits and statutory controls for noise at work. Repeated occupational exposure to loud noises can lead to tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or partial or total deafness.

Remember: if the noise is too loud for you to hear a conversation without voices being raised, hearing protection should be available.

If you need assistance with monitoring noise levels, carrying out risk assessments, training or general advice, please contact QS Associates.

Further information on Deaf Awareness Week is available from the RNID.
